Petrology of sedimentary rocks

In Petrology of Sedimentary Rocks, Dr. Sam Boggs wrote what has come to be considered the definitive text on the subject of sedimentary petrology. The book is intended for students at the senior and graduate level. The text provides a comprehensive description, classification and interpretation of all major sedimentary rock groups. The essential aspects of diagenesis, particle and chemical composition, and provenance receive unparalleled coverage. Photographs, line drawings and tables are utilized to enhance understanding and illustrate sedimentary structures, textures and compositions.

A clear, fluid writing style distills the vast amount of information contained in the text, and presentation of controversial topics provides students with insight into divergent views and opinions.

Prior to receiving his Ph.D. in geology from the University of Colorado in 1964, Sam Boggs worked as a petroleum exploration geologist for the Phillips Petroleum Company. On completion of his doctorate, Dr. Boggs conducted research for Esso Production Research, applying geological and geophysical techniques to interpret the stratigraphic characteristics of sedimentary sequences and stratigraphic controls on oil accumulation in major U.S. basins. During his career, Dr. Boggs, has authored many papers in sedimentary petrology, geological oceanography, stratigraphy and organic geochemistry.

Igneous and metamorphic petrology second edition

Igneous and metamorphic petrology in the last decades of the twentieth century exploded into a broad, multifaceted, increasingly quantitative science. Advances in physical and field petrology and geochemistry have forever changed our thinking about the origin and evolution of magmas, their dynamic behavior, and the way in which they are intruded and explosively extruded. Developments in geochronology, quantitative evaluation of the role of heat and fluid transfer in crustal rocks, and new field discoveries have impacted our understanding of the evolution of metamorphic systems and their dynamic interaction with tectonic processes. Geophysics and mineral physics have provided new insights into the nature of the convecting mantle and its role as a giant heat engine driving magmatic and metamorphic processes. New tools of all kinds allow new ways of gathering petrologic data, while phenomenal developments in computers and computer software permit data to be stored, processed, and modeled in ways unimaginable as recently as a couple of decades ago.

LAYERED INTRUSIONS

The book by Lawrence Wager and Malcolm Brown on Layered Igneous Rocks' has become a milestone in the geological literature, and it was with some trepidation that I set out to try to update this classic treatise. As mentioned in the Foreword by Malcolm Brown, their intention was to stimulate interest in this field of petrology, and their success is reflected by the list of nearly 800 names in the Author Index at the back of this book, who have contributed to our understanding of layered intrusions.

Metamorphic rocks and their geodynamic significance

From metamorphism to metamorphosis, there is only a shade of a nuance. Because metamorphic rocks are not only what they are, but also what they were, and they tell of what happened in between. What must be discovered: how to recognize in the butterfly, the caterpillar that was, or in the caterpillar the butterfly that will be? And how to describe the metamorphosis, excuse me, metamorphism which leads from one to the other? It is to this engaging history, this marvelous tale, written progressively over time, which Jacques Kornprobst leads us.
